Photo Of Our Vancouver Home
Just After It Was Built In 2008
Today our house looks almost identical to the way it looked in this photo from 2008, just after it was built. I don't know what happened to the tree that you see in front of the house, but it is no longer there. Also, in 2020 just after we moved in, the 3 bushes in front of the house that had gotten much larger mysteriously burned down and we replanted them. Today they look about the size of the bushes in the photo above.

Lower Macleay Trail

Thursday, June 6, 2024
We went for a half hour walk of about a mile today at the Lower Macleay Trail in Portland, Oregon. It is a beautiful trail through a shady forest along a creek. The trail did start quickly climbing.

We paid the corkage fee on our own bottle of wine as we usually do at The 1905 Jazz Club. This was a wine that was from our Twisted Vine Wine Club (Fullerton, California) in July of 2018. At the time we had rated it as "Excellent." As a 10 year old 2014 vintage and from 6 years of our last tasting it, it was still excellent!

Me and Barbara. Not sure how I managed to take a selfie with my eyes closed.

Live Jazz Social 10pm-Midnight
Every Saturday No Cover At
Keys Lounge, Portland, Oregon
Saturday, June 8, 2024
The last time we were here for the Staurday Night Live Jazz Social the place was totally packed and we had to share a table with others. Today we arrived a few minutes before the 10 PM performance started and there were many empty tables as you can see in one of the above photos. We were able to sit at a table right in front of the jazz band. Even the bartenders don't know why it is packed some Saturday nights and not so busy other Saturday nights. We were surprised to see the drummer was the same drummer that had just played at the jazz performance we had just come from at The 1905! The Keys Lounge is actually just a few blocks from The 1905 and also just a few blocks from the Radio Room that is affiliated with the Keys Lounge. All 3 are the closest jazz venues to our Vancouver home, about 13 miles straight down the I-5 freeway.
As you can see from the above photos, they have a huge well stocked bar. You have to walk 180 degrees around the bar to see everything on the 3 levels of shelves. I was surprised when I went to the side that I could not see from our table: They stock at least 4 Islay Scotches, my favorites! Not only did they have the common Ten Year Ardbeg and Ten Year Laphroaig, but they even had the much more rare 16 Year Lagavulen. They also have the Bruichladdish Classic Laddie Islay Scotch, but not one of my favorites as it is Unpeated and missing the classic Islay Scotch smokey flavor. They might have other Islay Scotches, but I was unable to read all the labels from the photo.

Klineline Pond
Vancouver, Washington
Monday, June 10, 2024
This is the closest trail to our Vancouver home, just 1.7 miles away, along with Salmon Creek Greenway Trail. There is a nice easy walking trail along the south and east side of Klineline Pond that goes under the I-5 freeway, but this is not a documented trail. That is unlike Salmon Creek Greenway Trail that is well documented and can be found on the AllTrails and TrailLink Apps. There is a $2 Parking Fee, but I have a $30 Annual Pass that allows me unlimited parking at any of 3 Vancouver parks.
Burnt Bridge Creek Greenway Trail
Vancouver, Washington
Wednesday, June 12, 2024
I had planned for us to do today's walk at the Ellen Davis Trail, but somehow ended up at the Burnt Bridge Creek Greenway Trail. The description said that we could start this trail at the Leverich Park in the parking lot off of Leverich Park Way, or that we could begin at the other end of the park and do this trail in the opposite direction, but that there is limited parking for this option along NE St. James Road. We started at a parking lot that was almost completely empty, but we must have walked in the wrong direction and ended up at the Burnt Bridge Creek Greenway Trail instead.

Late Night Jazz Jam hosted by Garrett Baxter
The 1905, Portland, Oregon
Saturday, June 15, 2024
Late Night Jazz Jam at 10pm hosted by bass player Garrett Baxter with Anan Jones on drums and piano and with Noah Simpson on trumpet. I had no idea everyone is mult-instrumental! Garrett Baxter not only played the bass tonight but also the piano and trumpet! I already have seen him play the bass guitar.Alan Jones was on drums, piano and bass. Noah Simpson has been on trumpet and piano. Barbara and I usually don't go to jazz performances where the guitar is the lead instrument in the jazz performance as it is such a powerful instrument that everything else just falls into background music. Not that we don't like guitar jazz, but it just overwhelms everything else on stage.

Fathers Day, Sunday, June 16, 2024
A great Fathers Day dinner! I had to look at 20 Italian Restaurants before I could find one with food like Boston Italian restaurants. Most in this area are Northern Italian with NO marinara sauce, few pasta dishes, and no meatballs. This one is a genuine Southern Italian restaurant that has been open since 1949. It has Chianti and served spumoni for desert. And to top it off, a Red Sox vs. Yankees game was playing on the TV, just like my home town! Food was fantastic and the Italian owner stopped by our table several times.

Live Music at Trails End Saloon, Oregon City, Oregon. On Sunday this was supposed to be an Open Jam Session as is listed on their music calendar, but it wasn't. Instead it was a band with a $10 per person cover charge. It was a good band, we paid the cover, but we really expected an open jam session.

The performance was great as you can see for yourself if you play the above videos. However, there was supposed to be a saxophone player rather than a jazz guitar. Had I know a jazz guitar player would replace the saxophone player, I would not have purchased tickets to this performance. There are probably 20 jazz performances that include a jazz guitar player to every 1 jazz performance that includes a saxophone player. We can go see those anytime.
The Ben Fowler Quintet At
The 1905, Portland, Oregon
Saturday, June 22, 2024, 8:15 PM
Ben Fowler on saxophone, Jack Radsliff on guitar, George Colligan on piano, Ross Garlow on bass and Chris Brown on drums. The Ben Fowler Quintet infuses modern jazz with a heavy dose of soul, blues, and gospel roots. Get ready for an incredible night of music at The 1905! The band has new music, special guests, and surprises a plenty for this evening. Besides the standard repertoire from The Pilgrimage album era, Fowler will be sizzling up some new and modern tunes as well, from some of Ben's biggest influences, including Kenny Garrett, Mike Stern, Donald Harrison, Vincent Herring, The Crusaders, and more.

We were looking forward to having The 1905 excellent pizza, but they were only offering the items on the above late night menu. The "Garbagio" looked rather interesting. It was probably made up of all the items left over from earlier menus as it had just about a little of everything: fries, mozz sticks, chicken cutlet, and more. At $40 it was a bit expensive, but it was the most tempting item on the menu. The Kitchen let out a cheer when we ordered it. We brought our own wine from home and paid the $15 corkage fee. I'm trying to go through our large collection of wine starting with the oldest bottles first. This was a 2013 Zinfandel from Oakville Winery of Napa Valley, California.
