The iconic Galaxie property located at 1600 Round Swamp Road in Plainview, New York, is a prominent local landmark steeped in Long Island history.
Originally opening in 1962 as the massive Galaxie Caterers, it later operated as "The Galaxy" before undergoing various renovations and being rebranded.
The site has a rich and varied history:
- The "Space-Age" Galaxie (1962–1984): Originally built in Googie-style architecture, Galaxie Caterers was a massive, department store-sized venue
notorious for hosting hundreds of large weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, and major celebrations.
- Fire and Rebuilding (1984): The venue suffered a major, gutting fire in October 1984 just days before several scheduled wedding receptions, making
national news. It was later rebuilt.
- Transition to "The Race Palace" (Early 2000s): The property was transformed into a combination off-track betting facility (OTB), restaurant, and
nightclub.
- Current Status ("The Palace"): Today, the venue is operated as a premier event and catering space known as The Palace or
Carlyle at the Palace,
continuing its legacy as a destination for large-scale banquets and galas.
